Which level should I use?
Start with Recommended: it reduces the resolution of large images and recompresses them, while text and drawings stay sharp and selectable. Light changes nothing visible. Extreme gives the smallest files but makes text unselectable.
What if the file doesn't get smaller?
If a level saves less than 1%, you get your original file back unchanged, with an option to try a stronger level.
Are bookmarks, links and forms kept?
Yes with Light and Recommended. Extreme rebuilds every page as an image, so it removes them.
